Belted kingfisher

From some angles, belted kingfishers look faintly ridiculous, being approximately 75% head and beak and 25% everything else, but I think this view is a flattering one. There were two of them fishing along this stretch of Ford Lake. They were busy and active, rattling back and forth to each other and diving for fish (to the delight of a little girl on the boardwalk). Their call sounds more mechanical than biological and it carries a long way. I can always tell when there’s one around even when I’m nowhere close to the water.
