Eastern wood-pewee

Contopus virens

2 photos · 1 sighting

I find wood-pewees difficult to distinguish in the field from a half-dozen other small grayish birds, but this one was singing so loudly that there could be no doubt. I heard his song first and spent a long time standing on the side of the trail, scanning the treetops dumbly, before realizing that he was more or less right in front of my face.
